“…You‘ve had your chance. You’ve had your day.
You’ve failed. You’ve lost… Think it over!
A new world to make – think it over!”
Fortune Teller (“The Skin of Our Teeth”p.89-90, Thornton Wilder)
I want to imagine that I have a chance to change the world, create the new rules of life and lead people to paradise on the earth. It would be my limitless opportunity and I would have unrestricted authority. What will I say?...
“I want to live in a perfect world. I dream about happy life on the Earth. Positive emotions, justice, and comfort should fulfill life. I know enough how to make our planet a more beautiful place. I think that people need a leader and a strong authority, because they act like cattle and they need shepherd. I will be their leader. I want to create a new rules and a society structure. As the whole social organism we will choose the one most powerful foundation – religion. We will live as good believers. Does not matter if someone does not believe in this foundation. Everyone who does not want to listen my word will be convicted or killed in the name of earthly blessings. We do not need opposition. Everyone who is not with us – would be against us. And all human beings will say to me: “Welcome, Mr. Hitler”.
Do you see how this passage develops? Like above-mentioned “program” of attainment perfect world, most human ideas begin from a very good will. We, humanity, tried to make a new world from the early ages of our being. We wanted to be makers of a new life. We built the Babylonian tower. It resulted in failure. We founded and destroyed a lot ancient civilizations, such as Egypt, Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome. We procreated many great leaders. There is Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Carl the Great, Napoleon, Kaiser Wilhelm, Adolph Hitler. The results of their acts are in school textbooks and museums of history, archeological dig and annals. They handed down to us only the dream about great empires. They failed. We served to the national idea during the Cold War. The confrontation ended and we are living from one crisis to another as yet. Today we are still dreaming about new world. The Past did not become our teacher.
You will receive what you believe in. If someone believes in people, he will get the fate of people. Just repeat the fate of preceding generations. Nothing more than bitter truth: “You’ve failed. You’ve lost.” Wise King Solomon said: “there is no new thing under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9). Thornton Wilder accentuates this idea in his play-farce “The Skin of Our Teeth” by repeating the plot. His main characters, Mrs. And Mr. Antrobus, are representing ancestors of humanity – Adam and Eve. They get the chance to make a new world. But they and their son Cain always repeat the same scenario – treachery, hypocrisy, murder, and rebellion. As children of our parents we do the same.
We are living in an imperfect world. The modern civilization has a lot of global problems (wars, epidemics, hunger, global warming), which are unsolvable. Now we should understand one simple concept – imperfect people could not create perfect methods to solve their problems. As an inference, if we always make not absolute problem solving, it would create new problems again and again. The significant fact of this idea is American policy in the international relations.
In our modern time when we discuss practical issues it is not so popular to tell about God. But if we understand the futility of human attempts to build a welfare state, we have to allow the perfect being to recreate our world. These words could have the meaning only in case of faith. If the material universe is going to the end, we should pay attention to the ideal invisible universe. “In God we trust” – these words should become more real than motto on the bills. The answer for today’s problems is the word of God. “Casting all your anxiety upon him, because he careth for you”. It sounds very ancient or archaistic. But it is more effective than a lot of man’s problem solving.
How would I remake the world? I could not do it. I just can create my world and it would be very old and imperfect world. I do not want to be a new Mr. Antrobus. I prefer to let God create the new world. The next question is “Do you believe?”
